Young Golda, a Russian Jewish girl from Ukraine, landed in the American Midwest with her family to escape poverty and pogroms. However, life in Wisconsin is hardly better than in her native country. Her village is tyrannized by an alcoholic, racist, and violent sheriff. Nevertheless, Golda manages to form a bond with Samy Brown, an elderly black worker who lovingly watches over her. Their miserable existence could be bearable if the sheriff hadn't sworn their downfall.
