A starlit trip to the library
One gentle summer evening, Julia was camping out in the forest with her friends. She decorated her tent with Frieda, braided a dandelion crown with Abigail and roasted an acorn for Scotty. Then, as the stars began to wink across the sky, everyone gathered for the night’s most eagerly awaited event.
Story time by the firelight. “Can you do voices like last time?” said Scotty. “And show us all the pictures?” said Frieda. “And read very softly at the end?” said Abigail, with a little yawn. “Of course!” said Julia, reaching into her bag to find her book. She dug her fingers into the tiniest corners. She unzipped every pouch.
But her book was nowhere to be found. "Oh, no!" she said. "I must have left it at home." “Awww, nuts!” said Scotty. “That sure stinks,” said Frieda. “How will I get to sleep now?” said Abigail. Just then, everyone’s ears perked up. Over the burbly murmur of the river came floating … a voice. A deep, growly voice. And it was singing! "Row, rown, row yout boat Gently down the stream" Julia’s heart jumped over the moon. That voice could belong to only one creature.
“Bertrand!” Julia threw her arms around her friend. “Blistering barnacles! Julia! What a splendid surprise. But what, may I ask, are you all doing out here?” “Camping,” said Julia proudly. “What are you doing?” “Navigating. To my favorite book-scavenging spot.” “You mean … you’re going to the library?” “Elementary, my dear Julia. It’s the perfect place to dig for page-turners, sublime rhymes and other treasures.” “And for bedtime stories?” asked Julia.
