Charlie and the North Pole expedition
It’s the winter holidays. Charlie and Abdul are taking photos in Abdul’s garden. – You’re a great photographer*, says Charlie. – Thanks, Charlie. You are, too! Abdul’s Aunt Zahra waves at them: – Come inside, Charlie and Abdul! I have exciting news! Aunt Zahra shows them a globe with a map of the world. – This week, I’m going to the Arctic. It’s near the North Pole, she says. – The North Pole? Where’s that? asks Charlie. – I know! says Abdul. It’s at the top of the world! – That’s right! says Aunt Zahra. This area around the North Pole is called the Arctic, and it’s all ice!
– The Arctic ice is melting because of climate change. I must go on a special mission there to help the scientists, says Aunt Zahra. – What’s the mission? asks Charlie. – To take photos of the ice to show the world, replies Aunt Zahra. But I need two assistants to help me… – Me! shouts Abdul. I’m a good photographer! – Me, too! shouts Charlie. Aunt Zahra shows them a map of the Arctic. – First, we fly to Lapland in Finland. We’ll stay there for a few days. Then, we’ll fly to a Norwegian island. Then, we’ll take a boat around the North Pole!
Charlie, Abdul and Aunt Zahra are at Heathrow Airport in London. – Please wear lots of warm clothes! says Charlie’s dad. You’re going to the coldest place on Earth! – We will, says Charlie. Goodbye! – Goodbye! We love you! say Abdul’s parents. After five hours of flying, Charlie, Abdul and Aunt Zahra arrive in Lapland. At the airport, they put on their warm clothes. – Can you see a woman in a blue dress and red hat? asks Aunt Zahra. – Yes, over there! says Charlie. Who is she? – She’s our guide. Let’s say hello!
The guide waves at them. – Hello, I’m Astrid. Welcome to Lapland! – Hello, Astrid, says Aunt Zahra. Nice to meet you. – I like your hat! says Charlie. – Thank you. It’s a traditional Sámi hat. Sámi are the indigenous people of Lapland, like me! – Can I take a photo? asks Abdul – Sure! says Astrid. Say cheese! Charlie, Abdul and Aunt Zahra are in Astrid’s car. They drive to a forest. There’s snow everywhere. Charlie points out the window: – Look, there are dogs! Lots of dogs! – They’re called huskies, explains Astrid. And they’re waiting for us!
There are eight huskies. They are beautiful dogs with very thick fur. – The huskies will take us to our camp, says Astrid. – How? Can we ride them like a horse? Abdul asks. Astrid laughs: – No. We will sit in this sled. Climb in! The huskies run through the snow. They pull the sled behind them. – Woohoo! says Abdul. – This is so cool! says Charlie. Thank you, huskies!
