Dans une vaste plaine se dressait un arbre immense et solitaire. Il était habité par plus de mille corbeaux qui y vivaient en harmonie. Les jeunes respectaient les anciens et leur roi gouvernait avec sagesse et bonté. In the centre of a vast plain stood an immense, solitary tree. It was inhabited by over a thousand ravens who lived there in harmony. The younger birds respected their elders and their king reigned over them wisely and well.
Non loin de l'arbre, une caverne sombre et froide servait de refuge au peuple des hiboux. Les hiboux ne sortaient que la nuit. Ils étaient querelleurs et se battaient souvent entre eux. Ils se montraient plus féroces encore envers les autres oiseaux. Not far from the tree, a dark and cold cavern was home to the owls. The owls only emerged at night, they were quarrelsome and often fought amongst themselves. They showed even greater aggression towards other birds.
Bien que les corbeaux vivaient en paix avec leurs voisins, ils redoutaient sans cesse une attaque des hiboux. Aussi le roi avait ordonné que chaque nuit, un garde veille sur le sommeil de son peuple. Although the ravens lived in peace with their neighbours, they were constantly in fear of an attack from the owls. For this reason the king had commanded that every night a sentinel stand guard and watch over his people's repose.

One night in particular, the raven's lookout saw the moon suddenly dimmed by a great shadow. In terror, he realised that the army of owls was about to attack. Even before he could sound the alarm, many ravens were killed or injured as they slept.
